Chemical Changes: Reacting an Acid and Base
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

In this lab activity, students will investigate chemical changes that occur when acids and bases react. It is meant to introduce the concepts of chemical changes, mass of gases, conservation of mass, and balancing equations. Students will make qualitative observations and quantitative measurements.

In this lab activity, students burn a magnesium strip to reinforce the concepts of chemical and physical changes, reaction types, conservation of mass, formulas and equations, stoichiometry, Lewis structures, and to explore the concept of oxidation/reduction reactions. Students will answer questions during the lab regarding their measurements and observations and also write a lab report to describe their findings.

In this lab activity, students observe the effects of temperature change on the color of nitrogen dioxide and dinitrogen tetroxide by manipulating glass tubes containing the gases at equilibrium. Students are then challenged to figure out how to impose the stress of temperature change on the gas tubes using a limited set of provided equipment. Students will also write a balanced equation for the reaction and correctly determine the color of nitrogen dioxide gas.

This lesson reviews how to determine empirical and molecular formulas based on experimental data and percent composition values. Ten practice problems are included. Two additional hands-on laboratory investigations are also included: "Empirical Formula of Magnesium Oxide," where students will heat magnesium ribbon in the presence of air to form magnesium oxide and water and use their data to calculate the mole ratio for magnesium and oxygen, and "Water of Hydration Lab," where students will determine the hydration number and empirical formula of copper(II) sulfate hydrate.

This demonstration should be performed by a teacher. Ribbon seaweeds (sp. laminaria) contain iodine compounds which they obtain by extracting iodide ions from seawater. In this demonstration seaweed is heated in the air to an ash. The iodide produced must then be oxidised to iodine and recovered by solvent extraction and evaporation.

Grandma's Apple Pie

In this activity, students work in groups to create a presentation that illustrates the meaning of the statement "To make an apple pie from scratch you must first invent the universe." Students pick an element that can be found in apple pie and trace its evolutionary history back to the birth of the universe itself. They also share their vision of the environment in which that element may find itself 5 or so billion years from now after the Earth is long gone. Presentations are intended to demonstrate student understanding of the origins and life cycle of matter, so this activity is appropriate as a conclusion to a unit. This activity is part of the "What is Your Cosmic Connection to the Elements" information and activity booklet. The booklet includes teacher notes, grading guide and student handouts.
