    Cinderella around the world!

    Cinderella around the world!

    Overview

This is a remix of https://goopennc.oercommons.org/courseware/lesson/192 by Martha Levey and Toni Luther.  This is a multi-day unit on Cinderella and the many versions of the fairy tale. Students will listen to/read four versions of Cinderella identifying elements of culture and then compare/contrast two in groups. Then students will perform a reader's theater of one Cinderella story.  The whole class will remix the Cinderella story to write a modern-day version that takes into account their own cultures.

    Time to be creative!

Let the groups choose one story to dramatize.  Provide readers theater scripts for the group and give them ample opportunity to read, re-read, and practice. Have students use the elements of culture graphic organizer to choose a couple of props to create that represent the culture from their version of Cinderella.

Building Background : Cinderella around the world

Share a couple of versions of the Cinderella story with the class.  Try to share versions that connect to the cultures present in your class, school, or community.  Many versions are listed here:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinderella      https://kidworldcitizen.org/cinderella-story-around-the-world/

As a whole class compare and contrast the two stories using a graphic organizer.  (Double Bubble or Venn Diagram)

Identify the elements of culture found in the stories using Amity Davis's graphic organizer: https://goopennc.oercommons.org/courseware/lesson/2476

Next, divide your class into groups and have each group perform these same tasks again with two other versions of the cinderella story.  Provide choice to the groups as to what stories they want to compare.

Let each group share a similarity and difference between their stories.  Provide sentence starters for each group to use.

-One similarity between ____  and _____ is____.

-One difference between _____ and ____ is _____.

    Remix

As a whole class consider what a modern-day Cinderella might look like.  What elements of culture could you include from your class?  As a class plan how you would re-write Cinderella to fit modern times-- encourage students to consider their own cultures, how can these be included in their Cinderella story?  Rewrite a new version of Cinderella either as a whole class, in small groups, or individually.

These stories could be used for mini lessons on revision.  Or published and shared at a reading station in class.

    Present

Let the groups team up and practice and then give them a chance to present to the whole class.  After each whole class performance, have the viewers help you add to the whole class elements of culture graphic organizer that was started as you read aloud the first two versions of Cinderella.
