Lesson Narrative
Summary: Students will receive a choice board of different activities and will have to choose one.  After choosing their activity, students can be placed into small groups to work collaboratively or can work independently. Each team/student will be presenting to either the whole class or their small group.
Choice Activity 1: “Teenagers” StudySync Teacher Edition p.359 Copy Change Copy Change is a way to use the structure of other poets’ poems to create new poems.
  • Use the structure of “Teenagers” to compose your own poem about a new subject: your parents or guardians
  • Write from the perspective of a teenager
  • Reflect: did your relationship with your parents or guardians inspire parts of this poem?
Students will present to their group via face-to-face or a Flipgrid video.
Choice Activity 2: “The Voice in My Head” Teacher Edition p.393 Who is the Voice in Your Head?
  • Identify a person in your life who has had a significant impact on you and consider what you have learned from that person.
  • Write this person a letter to say how they have influenced your life.
  • Include specific examples of situations you have faced and how this person helped you navigate these moments.
  • Optional-send your letter to your person!
Students will present to their group via face-to-face or a Flipgrid video.
Choice Activity 3: “We’re on the Same Team” Teacher Edition p.405 30 Second Elevator Speech The 30 Second Elevator Speech is a clear, brief message about you and what you are arguing.
  • Imagine you are Jacki Jing and have just run into the SportsNews Editor in an elevator
  • Adapt Jing’s letter into a 30 Second Elevator Speech
  • Incorporate Jing’s tone and argument in order to communicate her message in an effective and memorable way.
Students will present to their group via face-to-face or a Flipgrid video.
Choice Activity 4: “That Day” Teacher Edition p.456 Living Separate Live Together Write the first two scenes of a play focused on exploring the separate lives that kids and parents lead despite living in the same house. Think about:
  • How old are the kids; Where does the family live; What do the parents do for a living; What issues or tensions exist in the family?
  • Add stage directions in addition to dialogue
  • Rehearse scenes before performing for class
Students will present to their group via face-to-face or a Flipgrid video.
