Food Vs Non-food Remix
Hook Activity
In order to get started with the standard, students will use the Food vs. Non-Food Sort document to complete a Venn diagram where they place food items, non-food items, and an item that can be both in the appropriate sections.
Independent Practice
Students will use their knowledge of food items to decide the best choices for a healthy lunch. They will complete the handout by circling the food choices that will provide a healthy lunch versus foods that provide little nutrients to the body.
Healthy Choices vs. Unhealthy Choices
Assessment Activity
To assess student understanding of food items and their benefits to a body's health and nutrition, students will complete The Choice is Yours Poster Project. Students will create a poster to be displayed in the school cafeteria that shows recommended food choices for breakfast, lunch or dinner (Choose only one).
The poster should include two different meals (one that is nutritional and one that is not nutritional). They should also include nutritional information about the food items as well as the health benefits. The healthy meal should contrast the unhealthy meal visually on the poster.
Creativity is important and students should gear their posters towards the peers in the school. A rubric will be used to assess the components of the poster.
