Natural Disaster Myth Directions

Objective: You will be writing and revising your own original myth this week. Your myth will explain the natural disaster you have been researching this unit, using the genre characteristics of a myth (NC.W.7.2).

Your myth should follow the plot progression for a myth/hero's journey and be sure to include:

  • A god and/or goddess
  • A hero
  • A “monster”
  • An explanation of a natural occurrence (your natural disaster)
  • Human emotions felt by your god, hero, and monster
  • Literary Elements: Conflict, Theme, Developed Characterization, Protagonist, Antagonist

You will start by completing a myth characteristic graphic organizer for your myth. You can represent your myth as a short story, as a storyboard, or some other pre-approved method of delivery (presentation, video, etc.).

  • Introduce your characters: what qualities do they possess that relate to the qualities of your researched natural disaster?
  • Develop the story to include the Gods’ interactions with others, the effect of their emotions, and the result of their conflict. These details should be aligned to the scientific information you discovered in your research.
  • Use appropriate transitions to create a readable flow to your text.
  • Use precise scientific terminology when applicable.
  • Your myth should also have a developed theme that is linked to the emotions of the Gods and the actions of your hero.

Submission:

  • Storyboard: you do not need to use color. Your images should be detailed enough to express the details of your myth.
  • Typing: best draft should be Double Spaced, 12 pt. font.
  • Other method: must be pre-approved by teacher, must be digital format, must meet requirements
