Putting Robots to Work with Force & Friction
Read the Fine Print
Educational Use
Rating
0.0 stars

Students learn about the concept of pushing, as well as the relationship between force and mass. Students practice measurement skills using pan scales and rulers to make predictions about mass and distance. A LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT robot is used to test their hypotheses. By the end of the activity, students have a better understanding of robotics, mass and friction and the concept of predicting.

Lesson plan using a Cyberchase activity, students become more familiar and proficient at metric unit measurement by examining measurement and predictions concerning indoor tracks (200 m) and outdoor tracks (400 m). This CYBERCHASE activity is motivated by a Cyberchase For Real segment in which Bianca competes in her first track meet, but is not convinced that the staggered distances of the lanes on the indoor track are all the same distance.

Students solidify their understanding of the terms "circumference" and "rotation" through the use of LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT robotics components. They measure the circumference of robot wheels to determine how far the robot can travel during one rotation of an NXT motor. They sharpen their metric system measurement skills by precisely recording the length of a wheel's circumference in centimeters, as well as fractions of centimeters. Through this activity, students practice brainstorming ways to solve a problem when presented with a given scenario, improve their ability to measure and record lengths to different degrees of precision, and become familiar with common geometric terms (such as perimeter and rotation).

The earliest explorers did not have computers or satellites to help them know their exact location. The most accurate tool developed was the sextant to determine latitude and longitude. In this activity, the sextant is introduced and discussed with the class. Students will learn how a sextant can be a reliable tool that is still being used by today's navigators and how computers can help assure accuracy when measuring angles. Also, this activity will show how computers can be used to understand equations even when knowing how to do the math is unknown.

Lesson plan using a Cyberchase activity, gives students practice in estimating heights and lengths of objects when the measurement tools are not rulers. Two different kinds of measurement units allow students to measure by repeating the measurement with a single smaller object, and to measure with an object that is composed of multiple repeating units.

Students learn that math is important in navigation and engineering. They learn about triangles and how they can help determine distances. Ancient land and sea navigators started with the most basic of navigation equations (speed x time = distance). Today, navigational satellites use equations that take into account the relative effects of space and time. However, even these high-tech wonders cannot be built without pure and simple math concepts — basic geometry and trigonometry — that have been used for thousands of years.
