Accuracy of measurement in navigation depends very much on the situation. If a sailor's target is an island 200 km wide, sailing off center by 10 or 20 km is not a major problem. But, if the island were only 1 km wide, it would be missed if off just the smallest bit. Many of the measurements made while navigating involve angles, and a small error in the angle can translate to a much larger error in position when traveling long distances.

Students will select a question that they are interested in finding information about such as, "What is your favorite food?" Then students choose three items that their classmates will have to choose from; for example, 1)pizza, 2) hot dog, 3) nachos. With some instruction on data collection, groups of students survey others on their question using tally marks. They will complete a line graph of the collected data.

This lesson is Day 1 in a series of 5 lessons around U.S customary measurement.

This 3rd grade video lesson introduces the U.S. customary measurements for length: inches, feet, and yards. In this lesson, students will learn benchmarks (visuals) for measuring in inches, feet and yards when they don't have standard measurement tools available.

This lesson is Day 1 in a series of 5 lessons around U.S customary measurement.

This video lesson introduces U.S. customary units for measuring capacity (cups, pints, quarts, and gallons). Students examine benchmarks for each unit, and then apply their knowledge of capacity to make lava lamps. To make a lava lamp, students will need: 1 quart-size empty water bottle, 2 cups vegetable oil, 1 cup water, food coloring, 1 alka-seltzer tablet. (All measurements are approximate and may be adjusted based on the capacity of the water bottle).

Over time, many tools have been developed by economists to monitor a nation’s economic performance. And while many of these tools can seem too large in scale and too overwhelming to apply to your daily life, looking at some of the same indicators that economists do can actually help you as an individual make decisions on how to make the most of your income.

Students use simple materials to design an open spectrograph so they can calculate the angle light is bent when it passes through a holographic diffraction grating. A holographic diffraction grating acts like a prism, showing the visual components of light. After finding the desired angles, students use what they have learned to design their own spectrograph enclosure.
