In this lesson, students model subtraction of 8 from teen numbers.
In this lesson, students model subtraction of 8 from teen numbers.
In this lesson, students solve addition and subtraction problems decomposing and composing teen numbers as 1 ten and some ones.
In this lesson, students solve addition problems using ten as a unit, and write two-step solutions.
In this lesson, students solve subtraction problems using ten as a unit, and write two-step solutions.
In this lesson, students recognize and make use of part–whole relationships within tape diagrams when solving a variety of problem types.
Grade 1 Module 1: Sums and Differences to 100. Contains 39 Lessons.
This site features a video overview of Addition (Sums to Twenty) for 1st Graders.
Students are lifeguards who must save the swimmer. Students are shown a number line indicating where the swimmer is located. The distance between the boat and swimmer is indicated beneath the 10 & 1 gears. Students must move the boat using the 10 & 1 gears to the correct number in order to rescue the swimmer.
This task is designed to help students visualize where the 10's are on a single digit addition table and explain why this is so.
Students in my class work through the Math Expressions curriculum. However, they need some enrichments. Students need more motivation and active, quick practice in regards to math fact fluency. So, I have found a few enrichment resources (mainly on-line) and ways to track student growth data while using the resources. This unit compiles the resources and will continue to be added to as I find more and more ideas throughout the years.
This is the About the Cluster document written by the NC2ML group who created the instructional frameworks. This is a great resource to read while starting to plan for First Grade Cluster 2.
This document is the About the Cluster document created by the authors of the NC2ML Instructional Frameworks. Read this document prior to teaching the cluster in order to get insight into the clustering of the standards, mathematics to be taught, and important considerations.
This document is not remixable since the document has been written by creators of the NC2ML Instructional Frameworks.
This is a teacher resource that shows activities for students to decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way, e.g., by using objects or drawings, and record each decomposition by a drawing or equation (e.g., 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1).
For this task, students look at a picture of a number and fingers to come up with a number sentence that matches the picture.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach first graders an overview of subtraction (numbers to 100).
This video lecture serves as a review of subtraction up to the number twenty for first graders.
This interactive reinforces students' ability to count back and to understand the "take away" model of subtraction. Students select starting numbers from 10 to 20. As a group of rabbits appear, students are asked how many will remain if a certain number jump away.
In this activity, students play a game which builds their understanding of composing numbers to 20. The patterns and strategies students notice while playing the game are formalized through classroom discussion and follow-up activities. Ideas for assessment are also provided for the teacher.
This resource is part of Tools4NCTeachers.
This task calls for students to solve an addition problem using a variety of equations. The task may be used for instruction or assessment purposes.
