Detecting El Nino in Sea Surface Temperature Data

In this lesson, students are introduced to normal seasonal sea surface temperature (SST) variation as well as extreme variation, as in the case of El Niño and La Niña events, in the equatorial Pacific Ocean. They will learn how to download seasonal SST data from the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL), via a THREDDS server, for the years 1982 to 1998. With My World GISTM, they will visualize and analyze that data, looking for the tell-tale SST signature of El Niño and La Niña events that occurred during that time period. At the conclusion of the chapter, students will be given the opportunity to analyze a season of their own choosing to determine if an El Niño and La Niña SST pattern emerged in that year's data.

Determining the Color of Nitrogen Dioxide Through Inquiry: A Demonstration of LeChatelier's Principle

In this lab activity, students observe the effects of temperature change on the color of nitrogen dioxide and dinitrogen tetroxide by manipulating glass tubes containing the gases at equilibrium. Students are then challenged to figure out how to impose the stress of temperature change on the gas tubes using a limited set of provided equipment. Students will also write a balanced equation for the reaction and correctly determine the color of nitrogen dioxide gas.

Discovering Velocity Outside of the Classroom

In this data-based activity, students gather data as a class from a person running at different rates on a football field. Synchronizing stopwatches and placing students every 10 yards apart as a classmate runs down the field and data is collected. The students then share the data as a class and transfer it to any graphing program. Once graphed, the entire class has the exact same distance versus time graph. As a class we then discuss what was happening between various time intervals, record in words what the graph is showing, and calculate average velocity.

In this multi-age lesson, students will work with an upper elementary partner to collect and observe soil samples from the school grounds. They will divide a paper plate into four sections and label them animals, pllants, rocks and other and dissect their soil, placing what they find on the labeled paper plate sections. At the end of the lesson, students discuss as a group what they found in the soil.
