Nets: Message in a Box
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

Students will work in cooperative/collaborative groups to compare and contrast a two-dimensional pattern and a three-dimensional shape. Students will use a net to label and then construct a rectangular prism. Students will find the surface area of a rectangular prism. As a final performance task, students will create a message box.

In this lesson, students determine that a right rectangular prism has six faces: top and bottom, front and back, and two sides. They determine that surface area is obtained by adding the areas of all the faces and develop the formula SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh. Students develop and apply the formula for the surface area of a cube as SA = 6s2.
