With this lesson, students learn about business and economics in the free enterprise system focusing on individuals, such as Milton Hershey, Wallace Amos, and Sam Walton.

Students will take a trip together to explore a locally owned business in their community. Children and adults will use the suggested questions to learn more about what it takes to run a business while thinking about the business history of their hometown.
Students can learn about Hugh MacRae who developed special grazing techniques in the mountains of North Carolina and served as Secretary of Agriculture for two different Presidents during the early 20th Century.
Higher-level students will be divided into 3 small groups so that they may work collaboratively with their peers to research entrepreneurs of the 3 main regions of NC (coastal, piedmont, and mountain). Each group will work to find the entrepreneurs of their particular region, and they will make the connection as to why the entrepreneur was able to make business decisions based on the needs and desires of the consumers in the region of NC. Students will work together as a whole group to create a topographical map of NC and show where entrepreneurs have established businesses/developed products or services in each region. Students will create a legend to show types of businesses/products/services. Then each individual student will write a paper telling about one entrepreneur in their region explaining how/why the region was conducive for entrepreneurship. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
This article on NC REAL Talk provides information about a entrepreneurial business in Mt. Airy that specializes in "5 Inch Cutie Pies." The owners have an orchard of more that 2,000 trees. Students will learn about the the grant the owners received to enhance their business ventures and how their apple by-products benefit their community members. Excess pies are donated to feed the less fortunate.

They knew they needed to write a business plan to move their entrepreneurial plans forward, but they also needed some help to pull it all together. Their new business is featured on this site. Robeson Community College Combines entrepreneurship and environment in the "GreenZone." Robeson County is becoming known as the solar farm county in the state.
