This video series is broken up into two-part mini programs which each include a short video history lesson followed by a second video with a craft activity. These videos are designed to be viewed together to learn about history of Vance Birthplace State Historic Site in the mountains of North Carolina and life in the 1800s.

You have learned that there are different areas of social studies. You have learned about geography. You have also learned about economics. In this chapter you will learn about history. You will discover that history is what happened in the past.

This lesson accompanies the North Carolina children's book, "My NC from A to Z" which celebrates pride of place, and creates connections to North Carolina's rich African American heritage. In this lesson, students will identify different genres of music by NC African American artists and diverse musical regions of North Carolina. Students will create a "train route map" to understand the Great Migration and how Raleigh was a key point of train departure. Students will retell biographies of select musicians and artists using the Great Migration as a backdrop for cross-cultural influences.

The NC Kids' Exploration Journals are a fun educational tool to help youth explore their communities and natural surroundings! Each journal contains: 18 multidisciplinary activities with guided prompts, 6 lined journal pages for recording observations and reflections, and 4 blank pages for individual creativity.

The digital versions of the journal are designed to be printed out for students either as individual activities or in its entirety so that they can explore their school yard, local park, or own backyard. Though designed for 1st - 5th-graders, older audiences may enjoy them too! They are also available in both English and Spanish languages.

The teacher will introduce students to websites about famous North Carolinians who have made contributions in our local communities and regions over time.  Higher-level students will work in small groups of 3 students, and they will work collaboratively in those small groups to pick 10 diverse historical figures of NC who have made contributions.  Then they will discuss and research these individuals to rank them according to amount of impact that their contributions had on our communities and state.  Students will need to justify their rankings which will require critical thinking and collaboration.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

After the teacher has read books and internet articles to students regarding key historical events that occurred in NC and in their own area of the state and that have affected the local community, region, and state, higher level students will be asked to research more deeply these  events and collaboratively create a timeline of these events (in NC). This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. In this activity, students use a story map to follow the historic route of the Buncombe Turnpike and learn more about its economic and cultural impact on western North Carolina. Students will also see how the landscape has transformed in the nearly 200 years since the creation of the Turnpike.
