This drawing lesson from the Andy Warhol Museum teaches students how to use Andy Warhol’s early drawing technique that incorporates a very basic printing process. Critical thinking skills are used to judge commercial advertisements and students make decisions on what they will include, embellish and edit out of their own drawings to gain a desired effect. This fully developed lesson plan is available as a PDF and includes handouts, worksheets, rubric, and a slide show with images and student examples.

Students will engage in learning activities of 'Creating and Making' and 'Exploring and Responding'. The 'Creating and Making' activities include: plein-air drawing; creating a tour itinerary; digital landscape; sights and sounds journal; and making a film. 'Exploring and Respondin' exercises include: art and science; painting pictures with words; imagining a new land; building on the landscape tradition; perspective; compare and contrast; the legacy of von Guerard; and appropriating von Guerard.

Students learn more about shoes of the past and shoes of the future by learning about Chinese foot binding and Nike shoe designer Tinker Hatfield before working collaboratively with a partner or group to create a shoe of the future that has a greater purpose using manila paper, scissors, and tape. Students will view and discuss Nike ads from Japan and Kenya before designing their own advertisement to "sell" their new design to the class. This lesson was developed by Laura Mitchell as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.
