In this unit students will learn how to analyze the motion of objects. Students will begin to make a mathematical connection with words that describe motion. This unit will focus on several examples of vector and scalar quantities (distance, displacement, speed, velocity, and acceleration). As students proceed through the lessons, they should give careful attention to the vector and scalar nature of each quantity. This tutorial also includes animations of each of the major concepts. At the end of each lesson students can check for understanding of concepts by answering concept questions.

Students are provided with a scenario and asked to determine which amounts of postage is it impossible to make using only five-cent and seven-cent stamps? The mathematics task is intended to be a problem or question that encourages the use of mathematical practices. The dialogue is meant to show how students might engage in the mathematical practices as they work on the task.

In this lesson, students explore relationships between x-intercepts, factors, and roots of polynomial functions using the graphing calculator. Students also investigate rational functions, identifying the roots and the asymptotes as well as holes in the graphs. Students construct boxes of various dimensions using graph paper, collect height and volume data, and create a scatterplot in order to determine the height of the box with the maximum volume. Students can solve this problem using a graphing calculator or by using their own scatterplots drawn by hand. The use of questioning by the teacher, and the group work of the students are important features of this lesson.

Each video is an audiovisual resource that focuses on one or more specific standards through examples and illustrations geared to enhancing understanding. The intent of each content-focused video is to clarify the meaning of the individual standard rather than to be a guide on how to teach each standard, although the examples can be adapted for instructional use.
