Fraction Creativity (AIG IRP)

This lesson is designed to challenge students who demonstrate mastery of understanding fractions as numbers (unit fractions, partitioning…etc.) and a strong understanding of fractions as a number on the number line.  It integrates technology, writing, and mathematics (focus on fractions) through the use of a RAFT writing activity.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. Bicycle Dilemma (AIG IRP)

This activity requires that students have an understanding of the impact (x10/÷10) the movement of a decimal left or right has on a quantity. Students explore the standard algorithm for multiplication of decimal numbers as they begin the task by solving various equations that utilize the same digits, which elicits the same digits for a product. The second part of the task involves analysis of a calculation error when adding sales tax. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. The Weekend Getaway (AIG IRP)

This task asks pairs of students to plan for a weekend camping trip.  Students will need to evaluate their needs, select items to pack, and ensure that each person’s load does not exceed 30 pounds.  In order to determine the total weight of supplies, students will need to compare decimals, convert fractions to decimals, and operate on decimal fractions.  In addition, students will do some weight conversions between ounces and pounds.  This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. Which Pet Should I Get?

This project is launched at your local pet store. Students gather information about various pets by exposure of visiting the pet store, class family pet visitors, a local vet, pet adoption agency, classroom literacy, etc. Students then choose a pet they would like to promote to sell at the pet shop. The students build brochures/posters/web videos to promote which pet a customer (the audience) should get. The concluding expo entails the audience listening/viewing student research and collected data so that they would choose which pet they would get.

The Waterworks Project

Water is life. We live in southern Appalachian Mountains, part of a temperate rainforest where over 50 inches of rain falls each year. This abundant precipitation creates a lush landscape on which our communities rely to support our population and economy. Students will explore this resource in depth from multiple perspectives. They will summarize the results of their studies with final products to include a written piece, an educational presentation/community outreach, a 3D product or art piece, and a multimedia component. Each of these products will allow students to demonstrate the mastery of both academic content and survival skills that they have achieved during the project. The final exhibition will be an Aquatic Adventure Academy where they will facilitate hands-on activities that teach local middle and elementary school students about water.

How a Change in Water Phase Affects Surface Temperatures

In this problem-based learning (PBL) activity, students take on the role of a student research scientist and explore the role of solar energy in determining climate. Students conduct experiments to observe how a change in water phase affects surface temperatures. Materials required for the investigation include 2 aquariums, dry sand or soil, two heat lamps, and two thermometers.The lesson is supported by teacher notes, answer key, glossary and an appendix with information about using PBL in the classroom.
