Students will find the distance between points on the coordinate plane to find the perimeter of the yard and determine which fence company offers the better price.

This task is accessible for Math 8 and Math 1 standards.  The task also offers teachers opportunities for the creation of  extension questions with area on the coordinate plane and the midpoint formula.

This task provides students with multiple pathways to solving.  Anticipated methods include creating a diagram on graph paper, creating a diagram using graphing software (such as desmos) using the Pythagorean Theorem, using the distance formula.  The task can be done without a calculator (8.NS.2 estimating square roots) or with a calculator for precision.
