Remix: Fencing Activity for 6th Grade

The Problem

Your parents have decided to fence in the yard so that your dogs can play freely and safely.  There are two local companies that have time to install the fence within a couple of  weeks.  You know that both companies will do a quality job, so the decision will come down to price.  Your parents have enlisted your help to determine which company will be more affordable.

1) The Fence Masters say that they will complete the job for $12 per foot of fencing.

2) Good Neighbor Fencing says that they will charge you $250 for the first 100 feet of fencing and $15 for each additional foot.

1) Graphing Activity

Tree   Position (X,Y)
 1  (100, 0)
 2  (40, 80)
 3  (40, 120)
 4  (90, 60)
 5  (20, 110)

On a piece of graph paper, create a coordinate plane (since both the X and Y values are positive, you will only need Quadrant I), making sure to label your X- and Y- Axis. Graph each ordered pair and then connect them. This is the perimeter of the fence.

2) Finding the Perimeter

Once you have drawn your pentagon, you will need to determine the total amount of fence your parents will need. To do this, you will need to add up all the sides together.

3) Which deal is better?

After you find the total number of feet, determine the price for each company. Which company will give your parents a better deal?
