Depth and Complexity Reading Log and Book Review Guide for Students

Part One:  Students will use the Depth and Complexity Reading Log to track their thoughts and ideas about the book they are currently reading. When they have completed the book, they will create a digital book review using a presentation platform selected by the teacher (Flipgrid, Google Slides, WeVideo). Videos/Slideshows can be shared with the entire class, or played in the Media Center, to introduce students to new books and genres.

*If you have not yet introduced your students to Depth and Complexity Icons and ideas, you will need to teach your students about this first. You can use the attached Depth and Complexity Icons Chart which uses Emojis.

Part Two:  Students will use the information collected on the reading log to create a Depth and Complexity Digital Book Review of the book that they have just finished reading.  Select a presentation platform that is appropriate for your students.  To prepare for this activity, the teacher will need to ensure that his/her students are familiar with using the chosen presentation platform.

This activity can be a center in the classroom or a homework activity. You may choose to have students work independently or in small groups to assist each other with creating and editing their reviews.  The activity can be differentiated for students by requiring more/fewer items in the review based on students' skills and needs.  ELL students can complete videos using dual language skills.  A sample script is provided to help students become accustomed to organizing their thoughts for video and for practice when they first begin doing video book reviews.
