Graphs Project
1) Write a Statistical Question
Remember, in order for a question to be a statistical question, you need to be able to gather more than 1 data sample.
Example: What hair color do the students in Ms. Stebelton's 5th block math class have?
NOT a statistical question: What color are Ms. Stebelton's shoes?
The first question can have more than 1 answer whereas with the second question it only has 1 answer. The first question addresses more than one person/group/thing and the second question only addresses a single person.
Write your own question:
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2) Gather Data
1) Walk around the class and ask each of your classmates your statistical question, making sure to record their answers!
2) Once you have your data, set up a frequency table and decide if you will use intervals or single numbers.
Analyze the Data
Analyze the data: calculate the mean (if possible), median (or median interval), and range.
If you are unable to calculate the mean, please explain why: ______________________________
Mean_________ Median__________ Range__________
Graph the Data
Graph the data as a dot plot, histogram, or box plot, depending on the type of data you collected. Do this using one of the suggested websites or you may create your own on construction paper (It's up to you!). Label the graph with a title, and then label the x- and y-axes.
DOT PLOTS: Dot Plot Tool– GeoGebra OR Interactivate: Plop It! – Shodor
HISTOGRAMS: Create Histogram Graph Online - Easy Calculation OR Make Your Own Histogram - MrNussbaum.com
BOX PLOTS and HISTOGRAMS: NCTM Advanced Data Grapher
Scoring
Question _______/10
(Is the question a statistical question? Is there more than one answer? Does it address more than one person?)
Data Collection _______/20
(Was data collected from every person in the group? Was the data collected correctly, following the instructions in the activity?)
Data Analysis _______/30
(Was the data analyzed appropriately? Were the mean, median, and range calculated correctly?)
Graph _______/40
(Was the data graphed properly? Was the correct type of graph selected? Were the title and x- and y-axes labeled appropriately?)
