Students will design a device using Spheros or Sphero Minis and recyclables to help clean trash out of waterways.
During this PBL, students will read a text and make it come alive by creating a 3D story map that shows the major events of the plot and the obstacles that the main character faced throughout the story. Students will then code an Ozobot to maneuver through the story and the obstacles while explaining them to an audience or their peers.

After brainstorming a list of essential businesses and/or points of interest, each student will create a building from recycled cardboard. They will then decide a location to house the building in the city. There will also be waterways included. Then in teams of 2-3 the students will use recycled materials to build a bridge to carry the ozobot through the city giving tours of important locations. The ozobot will need to be able to cross the bridge which will allow students to work through issues with force and motion.
Students will choose a landform to research. Using NC Wise Owl they will complete the Research form. They will use the information they learned to write an oral report as if they are a newscaster reporting from the landform. They will record the report using Do Ink (Greenscreen app). Next they will create a diorama of the landform in a shoebox. Using the ipad, they will take a picture of the diorama and use Do Ink to make the greenscreen video.
Students will build and launch Magnus Effect gliders and measure the distance they fly. They will analyze the data to judge which material gives the glider the most distance. Then they may do the same process for other variables.
Students work together using their knowledge of grouping tens to create links of tens, combine and compare their links, then realize that if they combine all of their links this could create enough “snow” to build a snowman in the classroom!
Students will watch introductory videos about paratroopers in WWII and how parachutes work, and be challenged to design, create, and improve, an original paratrooper with specific limited supplies.
The student will use StoryboardThat to describe Nora’s character as a typical Victorian Woman at the beginning of the play. The student will continue analyzing changes in Nora’s character as she develops into the ideals Ibsen wanted to present on how women should be treated contrary to Victorian Ideas. The student will compare and contrast the typical Victorian woman and identify the changes in society which Ibsent wanted to bring about which makes this piece of literature a Satire.
Students will use the Clips app to create a video trailer that incorporates the central idea of the memoir "A Mighty Long Way" by using images from the picture book "Little Rock Girl 1957." Students will also choose a song that connects to the central idea.
Students will create and record character monologues based on a character in Alan Wolfe's The Watch that Ends the Night. Students will analyze a particular character’s attitude toward and interpretation of various events and other characters in a story. Students will analyze what their character does, says, and thinks throughout a text in order to determine how the author has developed and communicated his/her unique perspective. Students will then present in collaboration stations and will analyze and connect other characters and their perspectives to their own. The purpose of the project and the presentation is to enable students to make connections to other characters and perspectives and ultimately to deepen the understanding of the plot and characters.
This lesson works well as a follow-up to “Analyzing the Elements of Plot”***Students will work as a group to create their own fractured fairy tale. Once their story is complete, they will work to create a visual using the Merge cube to pair with their presentation to peers.
This is a 1 day introduction to a career investigations research project for standard level students. It involves using digital tools to reflect and link personal interests and strengths to possible career paths.
Students will use digital tools to produce and publish individual infographics. Each student will insert their Infographic into a digital book which will showcase all student career investigations and serve as a future guide for career path questions.
Students should have read up to the Seventh Watch. They will play a Gimkit game to review how elements of the story interact. Students will then create an alternate ending to the story. They must explain where they are stopping the original story and how some of the elements in the story interact with the new ending that they will create the alternate ending through Storyboard That.
Students will create a web page that is informational on a topic they select. They must include the history or aspect of history on their topic, a step by step tutorial with visual and written instructions, and a page with links to find more information on the topic to name a few. This is not an individual lesson, but a project that includes web building, information gathering, informational writing, and using various aspects of multimedia.
The content focus for this unit is getting students used to using and manipulating multiple media formats. We will begin with exposure to multiple different formats, work with them to develop a working knowledge of the content, then move on into producing multimedia projects on their own. The first lesson introduces the topic and incorporates two different media formats. The second lesson incorporates infographics as another form of informational text. Students will produce a graphic organizer in this lesson to compare different types of media. The last lesson has students pick a historical topic of their own to research, and produce a multimedia product in the form of a Merge cube visual.
Students will write their own poems and publish them using Book Creator. Students will first choose a book about a topic they have studied in other classes (math, science, social studies, encore) and use this book to gather key events and ideas to write their poem.
Students will write a 6 Word Memoir. Using the Waterlogue app on mini iPads, as well as the PicSee app, students will layer their 6 Word Memoir over a sketch, personal photograph or found image reflective of its theme.
Students will use the green screen to create a newscast in a small group based on the setting of a WWII literature circle novel. Students will first write their informational skit, create text features (charts, diagrams, photos w/ captions, etc) inside of their news presentations in order to teach the class about WWII from their novel's perspective and setting.
