Sometimes there is a need to refine or modify a search. In this lesson, students will learn about some advanced search techniques and when it is appropriate to use these tricks.

In this activity, students will conduct research and learn about the instruments scientists use to explore space.

In this lesson, students work in small groups to investigate a science-related mystery using resource materials, then write and deliver a persuasive speech that supports the theory of the mystery.

Students identify stresses that threaten the health of ocean ecosystems, explain natural and human-caused processes that contribute to these stresses, and discuss actions that may be taken to reduce these stresses.

Mary Whitebird is about to turn eleven and take part in the Sioux coming of age tradition of Ta-Na-E-Ka. Literally translated as, flowering of adulthood, Ta-Na-E-Ka is a test of survival where participants are sent into the wilderness to survive for five days. In this CCSS lesson, students will explore this story through text dependent questions, academic vocabulary, and writing assignments.

Many factors contributed to the eventual success of the American colonies as they revolted against British rule. American leadership, the timely support of international allies, and international respect and recognition played major roles in the struggle for independence. Several documents and engravings held by the National Archives help to illustrate these important factors that led to the founding of the United States.

Students will also construct Learning Shapes to summarize modern reasons for ocean exploration and will use their creations to play a competitive "Ocean Exploration Bowl" game.

This lesson serves as an extension of a unit on waves that links the science of sound to the way that we hear. This lesson also investigates the role of hearing loss prevention as a way to improve public health. Students will wear earplugs while taking notes on vocabulary words, and then take a short vocabulary quiz as an exercise designed to show what it might be like to have hearing loss. Next, each student will generate a model of the process of hearing, and then complete a short group presentation on one of several hearing-related topics.

This inquiry examines the emergence of the women's suffrage movement in the 19th century as an effort to expand women's political and economic rights, and it extends that investigation into the present.
