In this lesson, students use the place value chart to record and name tens and ones within a two-digit number up to 100.
In this lesson, students write and interpret two-digit numbers to 100 as addition sentences that combine tens and ones.
In this lesson, students celebrate progress in fluency with adding and subtracting within 10 (and 20).
In this lesson, students celebrate progress in fluency with adding and subtracting within 10 (and 20).
Scenario
The Three Little Piglets need to buy materials to make their houses. They go to the local Home Improvement store to purchase their materials. As an employee of the local Home Improvement store, the Three Little Piglets ask you where the materials are that they can purchase to build a house. You show them the materials and they see that they can only purchase straw, sticks, and bricks. Pig One buys a wheelbarrow full of straw. Pig Two buys a wheelbarrow full of sticks. Pig Three buys a wheelbarrow full of bricks. At the store, the store manager tells the pigs that it will be a lot easier to carry their materials home if they put them into groups and secure them tightly. You will determine how many pieces of straw, sticks and bricks each pig purchased. You will determine how each pig bundles their materials and how much is in each bundle. You will write a letter to the store manager about how your way of bundling each pig's materials is efficient.
This activity was based upon the book James and the Giant Peach, however, it is not necessary to read the book to complete the adventure. The slides are comprised of review skills for first grade students in reading and math. Audio clips were from bensound and mixit. All images were obtained through google images. Go on an adventure with James and the Giant Peach. Complete each task by solving the problems and clicking on the links to find James' happy ending.
This book, presented in video format with accompanying lesson plans and activities, provides ELLs the opportunity to read, write, listen, speak and learn new vocabulary about a variety of language arts, mathematics and science skills including character, setting, plot sequence, patterns and research. Sample Learning Goals
Improve understanding of place value by using different sizes of papers for ones, tens, and hundreds.
Develop mental math strategies when taking apart and putting together numbers.
Use the “make a ten” strategy when counting and doing addition.
Develop a mental model of the basic properties of numbers including commutativity, associativity, and closure.
In this interactive resource, students subitize objects to find two numbers, and then use simple addition to find and match the number represented numerically.
This is the About the Cluster document written by the NC2ML group who created the instructional frameworks. This is a great resource to read while starting to plan for First Grade Cluster 2.
This document is the About the Cluster document created by the authors of the NC2ML Instructional Frameworks. Read this document prior to teaching the cluster in order to get insight into the clustering of the standards, mathematics to be taught, and important considerations.
This document is not remixable since the document has been written by creators of the NC2ML Instructional Frameworks.

In this assessment task students will read and answer the riddle, then they will use place value, addition and subtraction to determine the answer to the riddle. An assessment task sheet and rubric are provided.
This unit of 1 Number and Operation lessons explores numbers and place value to 120. The unit contains 4 activities.
This unit of 1 Number and Operation lessons explores place value through 3 hands-on activities.
In this interactive resource, students are challenged to find the card in each set that together make a match.
Students will observe the base ten representation and choose the correct numeric representation in this interactive.
Students will create their own symbols to represent ones, tens, and hundreds and will create pictures to represent a number. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
Students explore place value and comparing numbers with this interactive. There are two birthday cakes with candles, students must use arrows to even out the candles until each cake has the same number.
This resource provides number cards to help students understand place value.
