In this lesson, students will use a variety of mechanisms included in movable books and encourages them to build their own pop-up in support of a social studies lesson. Making pop-ups subtly reinforces students’ understanding of mechanical movement and helps budding architects, designers, and engineers begin to envision objects three-dimensionally.

Students will go on a field trip that takes them to historic places to learn through asking questions and seeking answers through observation and using experts. Students will be better able to observe details and ask questions. It will help children build an understanding of a specific historical place and time period, and also spark curiosity about history and ways to creatively solve problems.

Students will take a trip to explore the architecture in their communities, hunting for specific features from the Field Guide and using the suggested discussion questions.

In this problem-based learning module, students will research the needs vs wants of a typical family in the US. They will also research the basic bills a typical family pays throughout a month, create a budget plan for a fictional family assigned to each group, and present budgets to authentic audience.

Students will futher their understanding regarding the clash of Spanish and Incan society by creating newspapers detailing the events, people, and places during the Spanish conquest of the Incan Empire.

Students will explain factors that influenced the movement of people over time by examining the correlation between indentured servitude in the early American colonies and undocumented immigration today. They will understand how demographic trends, such as push and pull factors, lead to conflict, negotiations, and compromise in modern societies.
