This collection uses primary sources to explore The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin. Digital Public Library of America Primary Source Sets are designed to help students develop their critical thinking skills and draw diverse material from libraries, archives, and museums across the United States. Students will study "Flamingo Capsule", a painting by James Rosenquist drawing on the Apollo 1 training disaster. Students will try to connect the painting to the event by deconstructing the painting. Students will consider Rosenquist's composition and discuss the level of success the artist reached in portraying two opposite concepts within a single work. Students will research newspaper accounts of the Apollo 1 tragedy and create their own work responding to the event. Students will also experiment with scaling-up, the technique Rosenquist used to produce very large works.

Students will view Gillian Wearing's "Self-Portrait as My Uncle, Bryan Gregory"; learn about her process of documentary portraiture; and debate whether her work is "self-portraiture" or not. Students will also use collage to merge an image of themselves with that of another. Students will also write a character sketch of one of Wearing's photographs and a short biography of the person they have researched.

Students will view photographs from Ana Mendieta's "Silueta Series" and consider the integration of body art, earthworks, performance art, and photography. Students will also discuss art forms that are temporary or ephemeral and how photographic and video documentation become part of the work. Students will explore the concept of body language, work in pairs to create silouhettes of their own, create imprints or molds with their hands or feet, work in groups to create a work of ephemeral art and document the process, and discuss their own personal bond with a homeland or cultural heritage.

In this lesson, students compare the novel Something Wicked This Way Comes to an episode of the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer entitled "Hush." Both texts feature mysterious, silent men who come into a town and create literal and figurative nightmares for its residents. Students complete a chart and take notes from a powerpoint on the similarities and differences between the two.

The hero's journey is an ancient story pattern that can be found in texts from thousands of years ago or in newly released Hollywood blockbusters. This interactive tool will provide students with background on the hero's journey and give them a chance to explore several of the journey's key elements. Students can use the tool to record examples from a hero's journey they have read or viewed or to plan out a hero's journey of their own.

This lesson studies the 17th century Mexican poet Sor Juana de la Cruz and analyzes her sonnets and the impact of the historical context on her works. The lesson includes: guiding questions, learning objectives, preparation instructions, lesson activities with activity sheets, assessment, extensions for the lesson and links to many resources. The lesson plan and the sonnets are in Spanish.

This is a resource that can be used for whole group, small group, independent practice to help students monitor their comprehension. Teachers can adapt it and make it fit the needs of their classroom. It has suggestions for how to use/integrate the resource, but as mentioned above, can be adapted to teach a variety of RL standards.
