In this lesson, students will solidify writing and interpreting numerical expressions.
Guide students to discuss the algorithm or process that they would use to find a value in a sorted list and how that would be different in an unsorted list. Help them to recognise that the best way to search the sorted list is to do a binary search: it does matter what order they actually look at the books.
Students are provided with a scenario and asked to determine which amounts of postage is it impossible to make using only five-cent and seven-cent stamps? The mathematics task is intended to be a problem or question that encourages the use of mathematical practices. The dialogue is meant to show how students might engage in the mathematical practices as they work on the task.
In this activity, students filter different substances through a plastic window screen, different sized hardware cloth and poultry netting. Their model shows how the thickness of a filter in the kidney is imperative in deciding what will be filtered out and what will stay within the blood stream.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about mixed problems in fractions.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fourth graders about place value problems involving items.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about multiplying and dividing.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about multiplying and dividing - missing number.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fourth graders about multiplying and dividing - missing number.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about multiplying and dividing - missing operation.
This task requires students to consider different multiplicative structures for numbers. The activity connects expressions to visual representations to develop the concept. Students are pushed to consider increasingly abstract multiplicative representations of the number 30 for this activity.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fourth graders about four operations - missing operation.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing - missing operation.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fourth graders about adding, subtracting, and multiplying with parentheses - missing operation.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about adding and subtracting with parentheses ii.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fourth graders about placing the missing parentheses to make the equation true.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about placing the missing parentheses to make the equation true.
Problem of the Day resources are for use of spiral content review in Math class. Each resource has a week worth of problems, one for each day of the week. This allows for quick, re-teachable moments of standards your students may not have mastered the first time around, or that they need additional practice with.
This video has been created by NCDPI. It provides tips for integrating reading within the math block.
In this lesson, students will create and extend patterns, write algebraic expressions to model rules or patterns, and evaluate algebraic expressions for a given value.
