This grade 5 unit of measurement lessons explores volume through 6 hands-on activities and 5 worksheets.
This task involves a real-world exploration of the mathematics behind fractions. Students first consider Lucy's conjecture. Then students do some exploring of their own around the fraction 1/12. Finally, students are presented with an open-ended exploration time that could be tailored to meet the needs of an individual classroom if more practice is necessary.
The purpose of this task is to help students realize there are different ways to add mixed numbers and is most appropriate for use in an instructional setting.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about mixed problems in fractions.
This task uses music notes to develop a deeper understanding of composing and decomposing fractions. Students will discover that music notes actually represent fractional parts of measures of music. Students will apply this understanding to create their own music arrangements, using mathematics to support the accuracy of their creations. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
This 5 unit of number and operations lessons explores fraction concepts through 2 hands-on activities and 3 worksheets.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about reducing to simplest form.
This course was created by the Rethink Education Content Development Team. This course is aligned to the NC Standards for 5th Grade Math.

In this lesson, students will apply their understanding of addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators to a real world problem involving a river rafting trip.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about subtracting mixed numbers with different denominators.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about subtracting fractions with different denominators.
This short video and interactive assessment activity is designed to teach fifth graders about subtracting mixed numbers with common denominators.
This interactive X-ray math game features fraction problems. Students choose a box and slide it under the X-ray bar to reveal the fraction problem. Then move the box to its answer.
