Students are introduced to the classification of animals and animal interactions. Students also learn why engineers need to know about animals and how they use that knowledge to design technologies that help other animals and/or humans. This lesson is part of a series of six lessons in which students use their growing understanding of various environments and the engineering design process, to design and create their own model biodome ecosystems.

This multimedia resource, part of the NC Science Now series, describes researchers at Duke are using an innovative method to track Gray Seals and determine where and how often seals eat. The study will also provide information about how humans interact with these animals and how that affects their sustainability over the long term. Components of this resource include a video, a related blog article, and an interview with a marine conservation biologist. Links to these components are provided on the page under the heading "UNC-TV Media."

This activity illustrates the interrelationship between science and engineering in the context of extinction prevention. There are two parts to the activity. The first part challenges students to think like scientists as they generate reports on endangered species and give presentations worthy of a news channel or radio broadcast. The second part puts students in the shoes of engineers, designing ways to help the endangered species.

Our PBL project is about zoo habitats! A guest speaker, from the Indianapolis Zoo, is coming to our classroom to give the students an idea about how the zoo works and how the animals live. In preparation for their trip to the zoo, the students will do some research on different animals and their habitats that will see on their visit. After their trip, the students will prepare a presentation on the zoo habitats compared to their habitats in the wild. After their presentation, the students are going to make a book including what they learned and any improvements they have for the zoo. We will send that book to our guest speaker.
