Students will study "Flamingo Capsule", a painting by James Rosenquist drawing on the Apollo 1 training disaster. Students will try to connect the painting to the event by deconstructing the painting. Students will consider Rosenquist's composition and discuss the level of success the artist reached in portraying two opposite concepts within a single work. Students will research newspaper accounts of the Apollo 1 tragedy and create their own work responding to the event. Students will also experiment with scaling-up, the technique Rosenquist used to produce very large works.

Students will view photographs from Ana Mendieta's "Silueta Series" and consider the integration of body art, earthworks, performance art, and photography. Students will also discuss art forms that are temporary or ephemeral and how photographic and video documentation become part of the work. Students will explore the concept of body language, work in pairs to create silouhettes of their own, create imprints or molds with their hands or feet, work in groups to create a work of ephemeral art and document the process, and discuss their own personal bond with a homeland or cultural heritage.

In this lesson, students compare the novel Something Wicked This Way Comes to an episode of the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer entitled "Hush." Both texts feature mysterious, silent men who come into a town and create literal and figurative nightmares for its residents.
