In this lesson, students will make connections between the time difference between home and another city and that city's location on the globe. Students will use these connections to rearrange the maps hung on the wall so that they are in the order that they occur around the globe. This lesson is designed for use in the AIG (academically and intellectually gifted) classroom; students are pulled out of their regular classroom twice a week for enrichment instruction in their area of giftedness. This lesson was developed by Meredith Ewbank as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.

In this lesson, students will use analog clocks hung in the classroom and digital clocks found through online research to tell time to the nearest minute in a variety of cities around the world. Students will begin to recognize that times are different across the world, particularly that the hour changes from city to city but the minutes stay the same (with only a few exceptions). A learning road map is a great way for students and teachers to keep track of standards they have mastered.  This road map is for grade 2 math cluster 3.  It can be printed and placed in a data notebook.  Students would then color in the circle to indicate their level of proficiency.  It could also be used digitally where students would fill in the circle with color.  Road Maps help students take ownership of their learning and help guide instruction for teachers.  This resource was developed as part of a professional learning opportunity funded by the NCDPI Digital Learning Initiative Planning Grant.
