In this lesson, students will learn about Celia Cruz and the use of objects to discuss people. They will understand how artifacts can help us understand people in the past.

This lesson reviews social skills like active listening and assertiveness while respecting others. Children meet situations every day in which they must decide how to balance their own interests in relation to the interests of other people. Like active listening, assertiveness is a stance toward life, a way of being in the world. This lesson is adaptable for younger students.

Teaching students about world cultures helps them appreciate the differences in people and their traditions. This site lists five things to exemplify respect or show appropriate social skills in Thailand. In this lesson, students will create a passport to "travel" the world. Students groups will study the weather of their selected countries, crafts, shopping customs, food, and etiquette practices.

In this lesson, students will identify family traditions that are unique to them. Students will interview their family and present a selected tradition.

The following lesson is optional.These are two Skype lessons that were planned with a 2nd grade teacher from Guatemala, for our students to connect and meet one another via a virtual form of communication using Skype. I was connected with a class in Guatemala with the help of Teachers 2 Teachers Global (For more information see Digital Resource for Skype Project in the Instructional Unit). Students are given their "Global Folders" and the teacher explains to them how it will be used throughout this learning unit. The teacher introduces the global issue of: challenges children face in trying to go to school around the world. Students will learn about new friends: Manju from Nepal, Wadley from Haiti, and Jednel from Tanauan. Students learn how different natural disasters, such as earthquakes and typhoons, have destroyed schools in various parts of the world due to their catastrophic nature, leaving children struggling go to school and get an education. These are cross-curricular lessons that include the teachings of science, social studies and the language arts. Students will learn how transportation can be a challenging factor for some children to go to school in other areas of the world. Using the Zimbabwean folktale "Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters" by John Steptoe, students will learn strategies and methods on how to describe the overall structure of a story. The teacher will use the book, Lon Po Po by Ed Young. The students will learn strategies and methods on how to describe the overall structure of a story. The students will also be shown how to show respect for other cultures through the use of this book, world maps, graphic organizers and other Chinese folktales. Students will compare and contrast two or more versions of the same story (e.g., Cinderella stories) by different authors or from different cultures. The students will be able to understand how the cultures differ in food, language and arts through the two stories that are being compared and contrasted. Students will collaborate with a group of students and select a Culture Project to complete together in school.  The group will choose, design and plan and implement what the groups roles will be and what materials are needed to complete the project.  The teacher should allow the students to work on projects in school so that equal participation is taking place and can be observed. In this lesson, students will have the opportunity to be part of a Colombian legend. In this case, the legend of "El Dorado". Students create a poster to enter into a poster contest that educates others about issues surrounding bullying.

This inquiry engages students in expanding their understandings of diverse cultures. Students examine diverse cultures and histories around the globe.

This is a short story that will lead to a discussion about discrimination and culture in a way that can be done with younger students.Later on the teacher can continue expanding on how we need to be respectful with differences, how cultures are different and how do we need to behave in order to have a peaceful world. Esta es una historia que guiará al discusión sobre discriminación y cultura en una forma apropiada para jóvenes estudiantes.Más adelante el maestro/a puede continuar expandiendo en que necesitamos ser respetuosos de las diferencias, cómo las culturas son diferentes y cómo debemos comportarnos para poder tener un mundo pacífico.

Students will discuss, investigate, reflect, and make a photograph connected to the American flag. They will then write a detailed description that responds to one or more prompt questions and share both photographs and descriptions online.

Three simple and age appropriate activities on Spanish language and culture which focus on the family and the Spanish names for various family members.

In this classroom activity, students will recognize the Smithsonian Institution and be able to explain what a museum does. This is accomplished through the use of discussion questions and activities in which they relate stories from prior museum visits or share ideas for a museum that they would like to create.
