This lesson is designed to provide students with a fundamental understanding of the strict segregation laws passed by the apartheid government in South Africa. It will help them understand the roots of apartheid, as well as how apartheid laws were passed and enforced. The knowledge they gain will serve as a basis of comparison with the strict segregation laws passed in the United States since the adoption of the 14th Amendment. In this two-day lesson, students will analyze the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as well as laws passed at the state and federal levels that were used to systematically deny African Americans of their constitutional rights. Students will explore food wastage as an issue in the United States and will work with other members of the school and surrounding community to collect fruit or other items that would otherwise be wasted in the school cafeteria. Students will read an excerpt from the book "I Will Always Write Back: How One Letter Changed Two Lives".The book centers around the evolution of a relationship between two teens, one middle class girl from the USA and one very poor boy from Zimbabwe, that started as a pen pal assignment for school. Students will consider the value of money to each teen based and compare that to their own perspective. Students will consider food prices and income in each country to determine the ability of each family to afford a healthy diet. Students will use proportions to find the cost of a variety of food items in each country. Students continue learning and researching their country's culture to complete a mandala. In their mandala, they will use the symbols, colors, landmarks, and history of their country's culture to complete a radial balanced mandala. A mandala symbolizes the wholeness and unity of the universe.
