This is a blended unit based on Unit 3 of the second grade Everyday Math series. This unit will focus on strategies for solving subtraction problems within 20. Students will learn strategies including: counting up and back on a open number line, using their knowledge of addition/subtraction facts within 10 to solve larger problems, and using doubles facts to solve subtraction problems. This unit builds on the last unit as students lean on their addition knowledge to help with subtraction. The big goal is for students to develop fluency with subtraction facts within 20.

Find examples of whole number prices in ads in the newspaper or on the internet. Give students a target of $100 to spend. See who can get the closest by choosing 3 or 4 items. Once students have picked a set of numbers to add, ask them to tell how they added the numbers. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
