In Part 1 of this unit, students will learn about data collection, graphing skills (both by hand and computer aided [Desmos]), and the fundamental mathematical patterns of the course: horizontal line, proportional, linear, quadratic, and inverse. Students perform several experiments, each targeting a different pattern and build the mathematical models of physical phenomena. During each experiment, students start with an uninformed wild guess, then through inquiry and making sense through group consensus, can make an accurate data informed prediction.

American Revolution Influencer Project

This is a research activity or research project that connects our students to past historical figures. Students will evaluate the motives, ideas, and effects of their influencer's choices and actions through a historical thinker lens. Higher level thinking, open ended questions will help guide students to understanding how an individual can influence society and ultimately, a revolution.Students will use a cell phone template to create a social media "post" describing their influencer's impact in the American Revolution.

This task allows students to apply literary techniques employed in a text.  Although this is for And the Mountains Echoed, it is easily adapted to fit any work of fiction.  Often students will create a wheel because information stems out from the center, but allowing more creative freedom and letting students use an object that is more specific to the text is certainly encouraged.

Animal Behaviors and Character Traits in Animal Farm

In this lesson, students who are reading Animal Farm, by George Orwell (All rights reserved-Copyright), will evaluate the behaviors of different animals. Students will then research the individuals/groups represented by these characters and they will start to make connections as they think about why the author chose certain characters to represent certain people. Once students have a better understanding of the characters and who they represent, they will choose one character and trace the development of that character throughout the text.

Anti-Bullying Lesson

This lesson is about the poem "Nobody's Friend" which was published in a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal.  It is used as the basis to talk about anti-bullying and bullying.  After reading and discussing, students will write their own poem using a synonym for bullying.
