Description
- Overview:
- This lesson is from Tools 4 NC Teachers. Students organize a set of data about their favorite weekend activities and create a representation to display the data. This lesson allows the teacher to assess students’ prior understandings of graphical representations and introduce mathematical practice #4 – Model with mathematics. This is remixable.

As a fifth grade teacher, I appreciate the math language being included into the lesson plan. It truly helps focus on using the best terminology to help build understanding.
-Full alignment to depth and breadth of standard(s) tagged.
-Has clear learning objectives that are achievable through completion of this resource
-Has clear assessment strategies that will accurately measure (student progress or mastery) of the specified standards, but needs additional (formative or summative) strategies
Strengths: This resource has great quality questions to ask students through the engagement portion of the lesson. The inclusion of the vocabulary math language, the visual models make it accessible to all students. The materials are simple to have available to all students. The representations of graphs around the room show student work.
Opportunities: Formal Evaluation/Exit Ticket has great depth of analysis and connections of student work to their objectives of the lesson. The reflection of the work is a nice added benefit.
I am an Accelerated Teacher for 4th and 5th grade students in Durham. I really enjoyed how this lesson used the students information for what they enjoyed doing on the weekend to create different graphs. I think this will really get students engaged with the task because the data is theirs. I believe the lesson has:
-Full alignment to depth and breadth of standards tagged.
-Has clear learning objectives that are achievable through completion of this resource.
-Has clear and sufficient assessment strategies that will accurately measure student progress and mastery of the specified standard.
2 strengths: 1.) Students are actively engaged in an instructional task that promotes the Four C's. Task is appropriate given the age and ability of targeted learner. 2.) Content presented requires minimal or no additional material to address instructional goals. Key concepts, ideas, and arguments are clear and supported by an appropriate level of detail to ensure student understanding.
Opportunities for growth: I think an extension could be to allow students to create the graphs/charts on the computer.
