In this 3 day lesson plan on The Rhetorical Triangle from PBS Learning Media, students will focus on understanding Aristotle’s three elements of persuasive speech—the ancient Greek words ethos, pathos and logos. Additionally, students will be able to analyze the effectiveness of rhetorical strategies and elements in commercials and speeches.

In this lesson, students view non-print campaign advertisements and analyze them for factual and persuasive information, then determine which advertisement is the most persuasive and share reasons to support their decisions with a peer.

In this video, students read a sample essay body paragraph and evaluate its supporting details to improve their own writing.

Frederick Douglass, a freed slave, is asked to give a speech to a group of Americans on the 4th of July. Douglass uses the occasion to eloquently and forcefully address the hypocrisy of a nation celebrating freedom, while enslaving so many. With equal force, he strips bare the arguments for slavery, concluding with a call for radical action to end slavery in America. In this CCSS lesson, students will explore this history with text dependent questions, academic vocabulary, and writing assignments.

The wind and water are personified as two women talking about their children. Mrs. Wind brags about her children, which annoys Mrs. Water who drowns Mrs. Wind’s children when they come to her for a drink. As Mrs. Wind calls for her children, white feathers come to the top of the water, causing whitecaps.
