Students will design a personal landing carrier to land on Planet X. The carrier will house an explorer (a raw egg) that can land successfully near a given target from a set height with the following constraints:
The landing carrier must: 1. Hit a target area on the planet 2. Protect the explorer (egg) during landing. 3. Allow the explorer to exit the lander to conduct scientific excursions. (15 seconds or less). 4. Nothing can be used on the floor (to cushion)

Each team has a budget of $45 to spend to modify a cup into the ultimate predator. After predators are constructed, students battle to pop each others’ balloons. Whichever predator is able to survive is the apex predator.

Day 1- Teacher will begin lesson by going over the learning purpose - that the weight of an object after an interaction is the same weight it would be before (the sum of parts equals the whole). Students will be given a small canvas (i.e. - small cloth canvas, cardstock, cardboard, etc.). Teachers will allow students to use various materials to create a masterpiece (i.e. - paint, buttons, pom poms, etc.). Each group would be tasked to weigh objects BEFORE adding them to their masterpiece (for paint or other consumables - weight bottle before and after use). Students would TRY to prove the teacher wrong by saying that the sum of their masterpiece was greater or less than the sum of its parts. Day 2 - Students would present whether they proved the teacher right or wrong, then peers would analyze their work by asking clarifying questions.

Using the materials- balloons, straws, string, tape, and weights students will design a rocket that will travel to a certain distance such as between 4 and 5 meters. Students will measure the distance of their attempts and record results. They will design a balloon rocket that will travel to the target area and not beyond by discovering the relationship between force and mass.

This is an end of the year culminating project . Students will work on their own or in pairs to create a house that will help their family to survive the climate of a randomly chosen location. Students will use their knowledge or ecosystems, heating and cooling, and weather prediction and tracking to determine the proper supplies that will be needed to build a house for survival. The project will include weather research, house build planning, creating a mock-up, and presentation to the class. The project will conclude with a video detailing what they would change after collaboration with the class.

Students will use Lego WeDo kits or any other building kit such as k’nex, or geomags or craft materials to build the alligator or alligator mouth and then use a protractor to measure the angle of the mouth opening. Connecting math and the everyday world through the use of building an object to incorporate angle measurements. As an extension of learning students will then attempt to vary the measurement by adjusting the bands or speed of the motor if using wedo or programmable build kits or non-robotic version by adjusting the hinge of the mouth. Students should attempt to alter the build in efforts to change the angle.

After reading several stories by Sandra Markle, and researching a landform of choice, students will make a list of adaptations that an animal living in that environment would need such as, fur, wings, claws, sharp teeth etc. Then using recycled materials such as paper rolls and craft materials such as wiggly eyes and pom poms, create a new animal.

In this lesson, students will design a packaging system to keep their apple slices as fresh as possible over 24 hours. They will use various materials as part of their package and will be able to place apples in different temperature environments for testing (in classroom, by a window, or outside, for example).

Students will learn about famous African American, Lonnie Johnson who invented the Super Soaker and overcame problems along the way. They will then be given the STEM process to invent/create a miniature toy. Students will learn about the life of a famous African American, and then apply the STEM process to solve a problem just like Lonnie Johnson.

The bunny has forgotten to deliver an egg. Design a structure for the bunny to safely deliver the missing egg without the bunny being seen (drop from above) and without the egg breaking.
Students will be given a variety of materials. They are tasked with building a structure (ie: parachute, cage, etc.) to safely drop their egg to the floor without it breaking.
