This word problem requires students to use addition and subtraction and think about money.

The purpose of this task is to help students see that when you have a context that can be modeled with a ratio and associated unit rate, there is almost always another ratio with its associated unit rate (the only exception is when one of the quantities is zero), and to encourage students to flexibly choose either unit rate depending on the question at hand.

Students will experience the difference between producers and consumer by creating a booklet using a production line. Teachers should discuss where things in a store come from and students will be able to define producers and consumers.

In this challenging instructional task students relate addition and subtraction problems to money and to situations and goals related to saving money.

Students will demonstrate fluency with addition, within 100, by flexibly using strategies based on place value. Students will also solve problems involving dollars.

Students learn about the major factors that comprise the design and construction cost of a modern bridge. Before a bridge design is completed, engineers provide overall cost estimates for construction of the bridge. Students learn about the components that go into estimating the total cost, including expenses for site investigation, design, materials, equipment, labor and construction oversight, as well as the trade-off between a design and its cost.

In this lesson students explore arrays through the context of flats of flowers. Students determine the total number of flowers and write an equation using equal addends. Students calculate the total cost of flats of flowers within 99¢ and represent cost with variations of quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
