Students will gain knowledge on how to recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions. They will learn the criss cross method of checking to see if their process of elimination is accurate in naming an equivalent fraction. Students will then model equivalent fractions.

Tasks for 3.NF.3
Students place unit fractions larger than one on a number line.
This activity introduces equivalent fractions and develops an understanding of fractions of a unit whole using pattern blocks. The students will develop a conceptual understanding of fractions through the use of manipulatives, pictures, and diagrams. The activity provides students with the opportunity to find fractional parts given the whole using different representations. As a result, students will develop an understanding of the relative size of fractions. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
