This is a research activity or research project that connects our students to past historical figures. Students will evaluate the motives, ideas, and effects of their influencer's choices and actions through a historical thinker lens. Higher level thinking, open ended questions will help guide students to understanding how an individual can influence society and ultimately, a revolution.Students will use a cell phone template to create a social media "post" describing their influencer's impact in the American Revolution.

Students will complete a close reading of Ted Kooser’s poem, Abandoned Farmhouse.  Students will use their knowledge about the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl to determine the setting and characters in the poem. After analyzing the author’s style, use of figurative language, and structure of the poem, students will write an ORIGINAL POEM in the spirit of Abandoned Farmhouse by using the same syntax.  Using the original poem and a template as a guide, students will compose a poem that reveals who they are through the voice of important objects in their homes.

In this unit students explore the extension of democracy and Native American removal during the Age of Jackson. They also explore how Jackson used the power of the presidency to attack the Bank of the United States and its favoritism toward the wealthy elite. Students then focus on westward expansion, examining art and other primary sources to assess the treatment of Native Americans. They evaluate how the Age of Jackson moved American society both toward and away from its core ideals.

Animal Farm: Allegory and the Art of Persuasion

Allegories are similar to metaphors: in both the author uses one subject to represent another, seemingly unrelated, subject. However, unlike metaphors, which are generally short and contained within a few lines, an allegory extends its representation over the course of an entire story, novel, or poem. This lesson plan will introduce students to the concept of allegory by using George Orwell’s widely read novella, Animal Farm, which is available on Project Gutenberg.
