In this lesson students are asked to find ways to share different-sized items equally between 2 people. They are asked to find equivalent fractions on a number line and to order those fractions by size. This CYBERCHASE activity is motivated by a video clip in which the CyberSquad has to find a way for Pan and Pin to share their different-sized bars of gold equally.

This task uses music notes to develop a deeper understanding of composing and decomposing fractions. Students will discover that music notes actually represent fractional parts of measures of music. Students will apply this understanding to create their own music arrangements, using mathematics to support the accuracy of their creations. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
