However, her journey was plagued with many obstacles, and controversy continues to surround the theories that attempt to explain her mysterious disappearance. In this CCSS lesson students will explore her life through text dependent questions, academic vocabulary, and writing assignments. Included are sample writing tasks.

In this video resource from American Icons, students will learn how Walt Whitman was a progressive voice and innovative writer during a critical period of change in the United States. In the midst of the Civil War, his poetic and journalistic works, spanning topics from the personal to the political, marked the start of a new era for American literature. Through an examination of primary sources and watching a short video, students will learn about Whitman’s love for and criticism of the United States.

In this lesson plan from American Icons, students will learn about Walt Whitman’s brave actions and highly regarded writings. After viewing a video about his life, students will examine the frontispiece and title page of an early edition of Leaves and Grass and will analyze one of its most famous poems. The lesson concludes with students writing an updated version of “I Hear America Singing” reflecting what they have learned about Whitman’s beliefs about our country.

In this middle school lesson from Teaching Tolerance, students will explore the calendar to determine why different religions celebrate different holidays and establish what factors school and government leaders should consider when deciding whether public schools should be closed for religious holidays. Students will work in groups to create solutions for school calendars that respect all students and beliefs.

The short story, titled “Becky and the Wheel-and-Brake Boys,” is about how Becky desperately wants to own a bike despite the resistance she is met with from her mother and Granny-Liz. In this CCSS lesson students will explore this short story through text dependent questions, academic vocabulary, and writing assignments.

The media has a huge effect on popular culture. Television programs underscore stereotypes of various groups of people.This lesson provides a platform in which students can critically analyze popular television programs. By looking at the media critically, students develop an awareness of the messages that are portrayed through the media.

In this lesson, students explore the total solar eclipse of 1900 and how Wadesboro, NC was chosen as a place of study for the eclipse. Through several reading and hands-on activities, students will learn more about eclipses, what causes them, and their paths.

In this lesson, students will work in a fishbowl discussion as both inner and outer circle participants, working to achieve goals and experience success collectively.

This lesson introduces students to the performance task, which they will complete at the end of Unit 3. The reason this is being introduced so soon is to serve as a bridge between Unit 1 and Unit 2.
