This resource accompanies our Rethink 5th Grade Math course. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning. 

This choice board will work best after teaching all of the NBT standards as it includes choices for multiplying whole numbers, dividing whole numbers, adding and subtracting decimals, and dividing decimals. 

This mini choice board was used as a center in my math class. I used slidesmania to display the options in a fun way. 

In this video, a student explains how to use the area model for multiplication. The area model is a multiplication strategy based on decomposing numbers basedon place value.

In this activity, students learn about their heart rate and different ways it can be measured. Students construct a simple measurement device using clay and a toothpick, and then use this device to measure their heart rate under different circumstances (i.e., sitting, standing and jumping). Students make predictions and record data on a worksheet.

This resource teaches students how to master multiplying larger numbers by incorporating three parts: 1) multiplying numbers on paper, 2) multiplying numbers mentally, and 3) practice & assessment.

CK-12's Grade 5 Elementary Math is a series of videos and interactive videos designed to teach basic math concepts to 5th graders. Concepts covered include Multiplication and Division, Place Value, Multiple Operations and Grouping, Decimals, Time, Fractions, Money, Measurement, and Geometry.

In this task students will critique a common multiplication error that occurs when using the standard algorithm. Students employ several of the mathematical practices when a) considering how reasonable the anaswer is, b) analyzing the work for an error, and c) explaining what went wrong for Elmer and how to fix it.

In this lesson students explore  open arrays and partial products for multiplication and make connections to the U.S. Standard algorithm for multiplication.

This hands-on activity explores five different forms of erosion (chemical, water, wind, glacier and temperature). Students rotate through stations and model each type of erosion on rocks, soils and minerals. The students record their observations and discuss the effects of erosion on the Earth's landscape. Students learn about how engineers are involved in the protection of landscapes and structures from erosion. Math problems are included to help students think about the effects of erosion in real-world scenarios.
