In this lesson, the students will get practice in reading and writing habits that they have been working with throughout the curriculum, in this case using poetry.

As a way to support teachers with English Language Arts (ELA) instruction during the pandemic, the NCDPI ELA team created choice boards featuring standards-aligned ELA activities.The intended purpose of these choice boards is to provide a way for students to continue standards-based learning while schools are closed. Each activity can be adapted and modified to be completed with or without the use of digital tools. Many activities can also be repeated with different texts. These standards-based activities are meant to be a low-stress approach to reinforcing and enriching the skills learned during the 2019-2020 school year. The choice boards are to be used flexibly by teachers, parents, and students in order to meet the unique needs of each learner.Exploration activities are provided for a more self-directed or guided approach to independent learning for students. These activities and sites should be used as a way to explore concepts, topics, skills, and social and emotional competencies that interest the learner. 

In this lesson, students research using computers to gather information on wildlife management and use the information to write a letter to an agency.

This lesson moves beyond typical character analysis lessons by asking students to identify reasonable occupations for characters based on the characters’ qualities as evidenced in the story. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.

Students will build on their existing knowledge of the solar system as they research one of the planets in order to determine whether a manned mission to that planet would be feasible. Students will collect information about the geology, composition, and orbit of their assigned planet. They will then work collaboratively to create a proposal for or against planning a trip to the planet to be presented to the rest of the class.

In this lesson the students will be using a variety of skills to analyze fiction and expository texts. This combines the reading of detective fiction with written expository analysis in the form of a Detective’s Handbook. Each student reads a detective mystery, and the class watches and analyzes Murder She Purred to establish a collective example.

Lesson 1 consisted of a reading about the true meaning of patriotism and another reading posed the question as to if a person should or should not stand during the anthem. This lesson investigates controversies with ways people express themselves during the playing of the National Anthem and will explore the controversial topic of how several National Football League players have protested during the playing of the United States National Anthem through a reading. As students read the article, the teacher will remind them that thoughtful readers annotate the text they read and sometimes reread the sections that seem especially important. As students mark and reread important sections, they draw inferences about bigger ideas within the text. This lesson was developed by Megon Mancini as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. In this lesson, students are drawn in by a classic story of guilt or innocence as they discover the story of Al, a young man who begins to doubt the innocence of his mentor and father figure. Students are introduced to the elements of a short story and forget that they are learning how to write an argumentative essay in their zeal to defend their opinion with evidence from the text.

Students learn about life in Babylonia through the lens of Hammurabi's Code. This lesson is designed to extend world history curricula on Mesopotamia and to give students a more in-depth view of life in Babylonia during the time of Hammurabi.
