Each video is an audiovisual resource that focuses on one or more specific standards through examples and illustrations geared to enhancing understanding. The intent of each content-focused video is to clarify the meaning of the individual standard rather than to be a guide on how to teach each standard, although the examples can be adapted for instructional use.

The cages they find in a store come in different sizes and Matt and Inez are not sure of Spout?s exact size. They use estimation and non-standard measurements to estimate Spout's size and select the best cage. Teaching tips are also provided that discuss frame, focus and follow-up suggestions for using this video in a math lesson.

Lesson plan using a Cyberchase activity where students learn about body matches, measuring one part of the body using another body part. They learn about non-standard measures and relative measurement. This activity is motivated by a Cyberchase episode in which the CyberSquad must act as crime scene experts to find out who kidnapped Chewcrocca, a giant cybercrocodile.

With this task, students are given various items to measure with unifix or snap cubes. After measuring each object, students record their measurements as “___ cubes long” and draw a picture of the object.

Students work in pairs to measure length by lining up cubes along the longest side of an item. They count and record length by counting the number of cubes.

In this assessment task students are told they are wrapping a present and need to measure ribbon to see how long it is. Students will use different items to measure the length of the ribbon. Students will then write to explain how they used the object to measure the ribbon. An assessment task sheet and a rubric are provided.

In this assessment task students will listen to the story Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni. They will be asked to tell what the inchworm is doing and why we measure things. Students will use an inchworm to measure each characters length. Students are then asked to complete a constructed response item explaining how they measured each character. In this Khan Academy interactive, students will express the length of an object as a whole number of non-standard length units.

In this task students work with partners to measure themselves by laying multiple copies of a shorter object that represents the length unit end to end. It gives students the opportunity to discuss the need to be careful when measuring.
