This unit of 1 Number and Operation lessons explores place value through 3 hands-on activities.
Students are presented with seven numbers to place in order from least to greatest. Students race to beat the clock to place the numbers in order. Students receive a new set of numbers when the order is correct.
In this task students compare numbers less than 100 to benchmark numbers and learn to build an understanding of the relative magnitude of numbers.
Students explore place value and comparing numbers with this interactive. There are two birthday cakes with candles, students must use arrows to even out the candles until each cake has the same number.
Students work in teams to follow criteria and constraints to design their own container that holds pompoms (popcorn). When this is completed they need to test and record how many pom-poms their container will hold. Students find that counting and organizing groups of ten is the best way to do this. They record their information on a data analysis sheet and the following day they compare their numbers and amounts.
