All students in grade 2 need to learn their “facts”. We know that it is important to attach thinking to this learning as opposed to rote memorization of facts. John A. Van de Walle and Lou Ann H. Lovin say that it is important for students to “develop a strong understanding of number relationships… and develop efficient strategies for fact retrieval” before teachers ask students to drill with flash cards or fact games. (Teaching Student-Centered Mathematics Grades K-3,Pearson Education, 2006, p. 95) Students will create math fact equations to match up with mental strategies. They will record these on cards and share these with all students in the classroom as a game to help all learn these facts. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
