In this Khan Academy interactive, students will name shapes based on their defining and non-defining attributes.

In this assessment task students will identify and name a shape. The teacher will set up a Triangle Circle Cube Square Cone Rectangle Sphere and Hexagon going from left to right. Students are asked to name the shape and to tell whether it is a 2-D/flat or 3-D/solid shape.

This puzzle activity will help students identify and create simple geometric shapes. It will also improve "positional words" such as left, right, top and bottom.

In this scavenger hunt games students are given the task of finding and identifying real-world shapes in their environment.

In this "word search" style puzzle students practice identifying sequences of shapes.

In this lesson, students identify three shapes: circle, square, and triangle. They will bend a pipe cleaner into a shape of their choice and group it with similarly shaped pipe cleaners their classmates have made. They will also be able to identify the colors of their pipe cleaner and group them with similarly colored pipe cleaners.

For this activity, students listen to the story, The Shape of Things and choose a shape from which to make a picture. Students add details to their picture and write about it.

Students will learn about 2D and 3D shapes.  They will use various materials to build shapes, find shapes in stories and at school, and build pictures with shapes.

In this assessment task students are asked to place shapes at a point on their workmat. They are asked to use their positional words to tell where the two dimensional flat shape or the three dimensional solid shape is located. A workmat, checklist and rubric are provided

After 2D and 3D shapes have been introduced, children will go outside with a parent or teacher. They will each be given a picture of a 2D shape. They will find a 3D shape outside to match their shape. They will record their shape in their math journal. This lesson was developed by NCDPI as part of the Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Instructional Resources Project. This lesson plan has been vetted at the state level for standards alignment, AIG focus, and content accuracy.
