This parent guide supports parents in helping their child at home with the 3rd grade Science content.

This resource accompanies our Rethink 3rd Grade Science course. It includes ideas for use, ways to support exceptional children, ways to extend learning, digital resources and tools, tips for supporting English Language Learners and students with visual and hearing impairments. There are also ideas for offline learning. 

Students will choose a landform to research. Using NC Wise Owl they will complete the Research form.They will use the information they learned to write an oral report as if they are a newscaster reporting from the landform.  They will record the report using Do Ink (Greenscreen app). Next they will create a diorama of the landform in a shoebox. Using the ipad, they will take a picture of the diorama and use Do Ink to make the greenscreen video.

Students will learn about the water cycle, watersheds, and specifically, the watershed that feeds Springfield, Oregon. After analyzing drought maps, reading news reports, and seeing images and videos, students will realize that drought is a real life concern. Students, as concerned citizens, will create a water collection device, at first on a small scale, and then a true to life water collection system to help re- purpose rainwater in our garden area.

Students will build a geotour using an online interactive map. The geotour will provide information about specific landforms in North America and Africa. This lesson was developed by Georgia Morrison as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.            

Students will investigate the idea that gradual changes in landforms reflect changes in the Earth’s atmosphere caused by human activity and subsequent global warming. They will create classroom service announcements, detailing the possible causes of climate change and urging fellow students to take action, to become aware of the connections among their lifestyles and the preservation of landforms. Students will be introduced to Earth’s land features and participate in virtual explorations of North American and African landforms. This lesson was developed by Georgia Morrison as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. Students will learn about the importance of water and the problems surrounding water globally and locally. Students will compare usability of fresh water and salt water. Students will research and promote water conservation. This lesson was developed by Julie Johnson as part of their completion of the North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge program. This lesson plan has been vetted at the local and state level for standards alignment, Global Education focus, and content accuracy.            

This can be used for assessment, extra practice, or even just for fun!This can also be modified to ask students to share more information. For example, they could also label each water feature with fresh, brackish, or salt water. Also, this resource is changing. I will be adding a rubric at a later date. But my students liked it last year when I left it with a sub. It was a good way to see if they could identify different land and water features!

Students are taken on a virtual field trip to western North Carolina to investigate the intersection between people and water in nature. How have humans adapted their environment to maximize the benefit of water? Are all intersections of people and water beneficial for both parties? STudents reflect on the power of water and our responsibility as environmental stewards to respect our water systems.
