resources, was compiled by the North Carolina Government & Heritage Library, State Library of North Carolina, North Carolina Department of
Natural and Cultural Resources, from a list originally published in Our State magazine (2012).

Enrich your lessons of North Carolina history and culture by connecting the past to crafts that are easy and fun to make in your classroom. Supply lists and instructions are provided on each page! Students become aware of the importance of the maritime history and culture of the North Carolina Outer Banks through the study of WWII, Piracy, Shipwrecks, and the Civil War.

In these videos, artifacts from the Vance Birthplace State Historic Site collection are featured with clues about their purpose. Students try to solve the History Mystery before the answer is revealed.

This video series is broken up into two-part mini programs which each include a short video history lesson followed by a second video with a craft activity. These videos are designed to be viewed together to learn about history of Vance Birthplace State Historic Site in the mountains of North Carolina and life in the 1800s.

This is a multi-day culminating activity based on unit 3 of the 4th grade Wonders curriculum. Students will work in groups to research a given landmark in Beaufort County, NC. After researching the landmark, they will record their data in the Google Slides presentation attached in the lesson for each landmark. After recording their research, students will use the DASH Robots to move throughout the Beaufort County, NC map, stopping at their destination. Groups will then use the DASH Robots to record audio of themselves describing the landmark. A rubric accompanies this activity so teachers have guidelines on how to assess student work.

The NC Kids' Exploration Journals are a fun educational tool to help youth explore their communities and natural surroundings! Each journal contains: 18 multidisciplinary activities with guided prompts, 6 lined journal pages for recording observations and reflections, and 4 blank pages for individual creativity.

The digital versions of the journal are designed to be printed out for students either as individual activities or in its entirety so that they can explore their school yard, local park, or own backyard. Though designed for 1st - 5th-graders, older audiences may enjoy them too! They are also available in both English and Spanish languages.

NCpedia is an online encyclopedia that covers a broad spectrum of topics and resources about North Carolina, including: historical time periods, subjects, and events; biographies; geography and environment; business and economy; historical places and monuments; natural resources and natural heritage; and many others. NCpedia also includes thousands of images. NCpedia's articles are all written by trusted contributors that include professional and independent historians, librarians and archivists, museum professionals and many subject specialists.

This Educator Notebook provides information on Women’s History in North Carolina for teachers to use as a resource, either as stand-alone units, or integrated into standard curriculum. Included is research from museum curators and educators, and articles published in the Tar Heel Junior Historian magazine which are written for students in grades 4-12. Lesson plans and suggested activities complement many of the topics. Adaptable to multiple ages, they meet curriculum goals set forth by the NC Department of Public Instruction and connect to classes in national and world history, geography, economics, and the arts, and can be part of any unit of social studies. The best way to learn something is to repeat, retell and teach something to others. Students will learn about events in history. They can be scientific or historical events. Students may read about them in a history book or even in a book of historical fiction.

In this activity, students use a story map to follow the historic route of the Buncombe Turnpike and learn more about its economic and cultural impact on western North Carolina. Students will also see how the landscape has transformed in the nearly 200 years since the creation of the Turnpike.
