This lesson uses contour line drawings by using kinetic energy (by moving around on the floor while they trace) and social energy (by interacting with the student they are drawing on the floor).

Students will take on a mystery, Sherlock Holmes style, to uncover the secrets, history, and deeper meanings of Moyo Ogundipe's painting Soliloquy: Life's Fragile Fictions.

Students will be able to: explain why Ogundipe used particular colors, patterns, and images for his painting; discuss what the snakes and birds symbolize in the picture; and express in their own words at least three reasons the different elements of the painting are a treasure.

In this lesson, students will learn about immigration to the United States using primary sources: children's autobiographical stories and videos. In teams, students will practice their conversation and problem solving skills by reading the texts by determining the most important details for the five identified subtopics of the unit: causes, effects, challenges, emotions, and hopes. Students will document their findings in visual representations of each immigrant child. This is a 1 hour per day/4 day lesson.To conclude this lesson we will look at Dorthea Lange's image Children of the Weill Public School and use critical thinking skills to write a poem about the image.

This lesson will involve students in the process of identifying and labeling geography on a "blank" classroom World Map. The students will hear about historical and current immigration with pictorial representation and words to support students' understanding. Using these visuals, students have a deeper understanding of immigration around the world and are able to make inferences about cause and effect, feelings, time (era), and location. At the conclusion of this lesson, students will use what they learned to write a word pile poem about Dorthea Lange's photograph.

Students will put on their 'detective hats' and use magnifying glasses to find evidence that supports attributing the paintings in the Molleno Altar Screen to one artist and one piece. They will work in small groups and present a case to share with the entire class. They will also explore what would need to be different for them to prove that the pieces do not belong together.

Students will be able to: describe what an altar screen is; state that Molleno painted the scenes for this particular altar screen; develop and support a theory or hypothesis using details and logic; and share what they think and have learned with other students and the teacher.

Students will examine the three historical portraits Andrew Jackson, William Pitt, and Portrait of a Boy for symbolism and its relationship to the concept of meaning. After learning more about Andrew Jackson’s involvement in the Cherokee Indians’ Trail of Tears in North Carolina, students will research another historical figure important during that movement and produce a historical portrait, similar to the examples shown, and a cinquain poem.

This lesson features a glue relief self portrait and personal portrait image covered with aluminum foil on the outside cover. On the inside are special messages about the "artist" and his or her special image.

This resource accompanied the exhibition Shared Sky (2009), an exhibition of prints and drawings by Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists which explored perspectives of the southern sky. Presented to coincide with the International Year of Astronomy, the exhibition traced the visual evolution of scientific observation and ancient narratives that underlie the complexity of Australia's cultural histories.
